The Middle Child Cat: Why Abby Completely Owns Our Hearts (and Our Toy Budget)

If cats had birth-order personalities the way humans do, Abby would be the textbook middle child. She gets away with more, tries harder, and goes out of her way to prove she can do everything the others can—and then some. And honestly? We wouldn’t have her any other way.

Abby love hearing the sound of her name.

Abby is 100000% a Mama’s kitty. Not 99. Not 99.9. One hundred thousand percent. She is glued to me whenever possible, and if there’s a lap available, it is hers. If there isn’t a lap available, she will simply wait until one magically appears. She is our lap-cat extremist and has zero interest in personal space—hers or ours.

One of Abby’s most impressive (and hilarious) talents is that she fetches like a dog. Toss a toy, and she’s gone. Bring it back? Absolutely. Drop it at your feet and stare at you until you throw it again? Without question. The problem is that Abby doesn’t just play with toys—she devours them. She chews, shreds, destroys, and dismembers with enthusiasm. She is the sole reason we have a dedicated toy budget for our cats.

And let me tell you—have you been to a pet store lately? A simple little stuffy is easily over $5, and Abby can turn one into confetti in minutes. Once we’re settled into the new RV, I fully expect to start making some of her toys myself, because at this rate she could bankrupt us in plush mice alone.

We are not kidding, she lives for her toys.

That said, we’re very intentional about our finances. We use the envelope system we learned through The Budget Mom, Kumiko Love (highly recommend checking her out). Because of her program, we’ve been able to build a $1,000 emergency fund for each of our girls, which gives us peace of mind we didn’t always have. With the new RV coming, we’ll finally be able to add to those envelopes again—and that matters so much to us.

Veterinary care is incredibly expensive, and nothing feels worse than imagining an emergency and worrying about money on top of fear. Our cats are family. We never want to hesitate if one of them needs help. So yes, the envelope system is expanding—and yes, we’re moving fast on it.

Personality-wise, Abby is also our talking cat and our crying cat. She vocalizes her feelings freely and dramatically. She narrates her day. She announces her needs. She expresses mild inconvenience with opera-level emotion. She is, without question, the reason I fully embrace the title of cat lady.

She’s also extremely afraid of vacuum sounds and other humans. New people? Hard pass. Loud noises? Immediate panic. But with us? She’s brave, affectionate, and endlessly expressive.

One of the funniest things about Abby is how she reacts when she’s in trouble. Our other two cats run when they hear “naughty.” Abby? Abby tattles on herself. She makes this hilarious little body motion and runs toward you instead of away, as if to say, “Yes, it was me, but let’s talk about it.” It gets us every single time.

She doesn’t like to be held and makes this adorable chirping sound when picked up—so naturally, we pick her up more often than we should just to hear it. Totally worth it.

The cat-scratcher is her favorite, it's not even a month old,
I make them now for her.

At night, Abby sleeps all the way through—on one of us. Not near us. Not at our feet. On. Us. She chooses her human, settles in, and that’s that. Movement is no longer an option.

Abby is what we lovingly call our mistake cat. She was originally meant for another family, one who wanted three sister cats. That plan changed, and Abby stayed with us. What felt like a detour at the time turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to our family.

She does wonderfully as an RVing cat, adapting well to life on the road, and we’re so excited to get back to traveling so her scenery can change again. New windows, new views, new adventures—Abby thrives on it. She watches the world like it’s her personal movie.

She is loud, loving, needy, dramatic, destructive, loyal, and perfect.

And honestly? That “mistake” was the best decision we never planned.

This is her very own wish list item she loves

Miss Fred: The Tiny Trouble Maker of Our RVing Cat Crew

If there’s one thing full-time RV living has taught us, it’s that cats have big personalities—even in small bodies. And if you’ve ever wondered what that looks like in real life, let us introduce you to Miss Fred, the baby of our feline trio and, without question, the most mischievous member of the group.

Miss Fred is the youngest, the smallest, and absolutely convinced she runs the household.

The Baby… and the Boss

From the moment she joined our family, Miss Fred made it clear she wasn’t here to quietly blend in. She’s curious, bold, and has a determination we’ve honestly never seen in a cat before. When she wants cuddles, she will not take no for an answer. She’ll wedge herself into your space, climb you like furniture, and vocalize her demands until she gets exactly what she wants.

When we got Miss Fred

And she usually does.

That persistence is part of her charm—but it’s also where the “mean girl” reputation comes in. Miss Fred can be rough with Ellie, our sweet older hen who outweighs her by a good 15 pounds. Size means nothing to Miss Fred. Confidence is her currency.

When those moments happen, Abby—our middle cat and resident nurturer—immediately steps in. Abby mothers Miss Fred fiercely and seems convinced it’s her job to protect the baby at all costs, even when Miss Fred is clearly the instigator. The dynamic is fascinating, chaotic, and somehow perfectly balanced.

A Grooming Queen with Midnight Mischief

One of Miss Fred’s favorite things in the world is being groomed. You could brush her for hours, and she’d happily stay put the entire time. This becomes especially helpful when her winter coat starts shedding, which—if you RV full-time with cats—you know fur management is serious business.

Most nights, she sleeps through without a peep. But when she doesn’t? You can almost guarantee trouble is brewing. Midnight zoomies. Climbing things she shouldn’t. Exploring areas she knows are off-limits. There have been nights we were this close to putting her in “cat jail.”

She also loves toys—but only if another cat is already playing. Then it becomes her mission to steal the toy, assert dominance, and walk away like she won something. Classic Miss Fred.

Dad’s Jungle Gym

Miss Fred loves Dad the most. There’s no competition. He is her personal jungle gym, climbing structure, and comfort zone all rolled into one. If he sits down, she’s scaling him. If he stands up, she’s already plotting her route to the top. It’s her favorite game—and his daily workout.

Despite the chaos, she truly is a great cat. Loving, expressive, and full of life.

Her Story: Why Miss Fred Is Different

We got Miss Fred four years ago while working at Holiday Hill RV Park in Coalville, Utah. She came to us from a family who meant well but didn’t know better. As a kitten, she was fed adult dog food—something incredibly dangerous for cats and especially harmful to kittens. To make matters worse, her sibling was attacked by the family dog and didn’t survive.

We took Miss Fred early to ensure she had a safe, stable home.

The damage to her system means she’ll always be an underweight cat. She eats special food, prepared specifically for her needs, and we work hard to help her maintain healthy weight. From the time she was tiny, she learned to work for her food—and that habit stuck.

She bullies your space when she’s hungry. She vocalizes loudly. She makes sure you know it’s time. And honestly? We depend on those moments. We cherish them. They remind us how far she’s come.

RV Life Through Miss Fred’s Eyes

Living full-time in an RV with cats means being deeply aware of their routines, behaviors, and comfort levels. Miss Fred prefers to sleep under the covers—yes, even in the dead of summer. She seeks warmth, closeness, and security, which makes sense given her early experiences.

As we prepare to move into our new (new-to-us) fifth wheel, we’re excited… and a little nervous. Miss Fred will absolutely find new trouble. New cabinets. New hiding spots. New adventures. But that’s part of RVing with cats—especially ones with personalities as big as hers.

We spoil all three of our girls, unapologetically. We are cat people through and through, and there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do to give them the best life possible—on the road or parked.

Miss Fred may be the baby. She may be the troublemaker. She may even be a little mean sometimes.

But she’s ours. And RV life wouldn’t be the same without her.

Miss Fred, Supervisor of All Things RV

As we slowly start tearing down pieces of our old RV and hauling items into our storage unit, one thing has become abundantly clear: Miss Fred is in charge.

We may think we’re packing, sorting, and preparing for the move into our new (new-to-us) fifth wheel over the next couple of months—but Miss Fred knows better. In her eyes, nothing happens without proper supervision. Especially when hooman Mark is involved.

Boxes are being stacked. Cabinets are being emptied. Décor that once made our old RV feel like home is carefully wrapped and labeled. And right in the middle of it all sits Miss Fred, watching. Judging. Occasionally repositioning herself so she can see everything.

Because, obviously, Mark cannot be trusted to do any of this without her.

Every time something comes off a wall, Miss Fred is there. Every time a bin is opened, she peers inside as if checking inventory. Every trip in and out of the RV is monitored closely, usually from a strategic location that makes it impossible to step around her without acknowledgment.

She takes her job very seriously.

Packing up an RV is not just about moving things—it’s about closing one chapter and preparing for another. This old rig has held countless naps, road miles, campgrounds, and memories. And while the hoomans may feel a little sentimental, Miss Fred seems to view this entire process as a fascinating puzzle that requires her constant involvement.

Is that box empty?
Why is that going there?
Shouldn’t that belong to me?

These are questions only Miss Fred knows the answers to.

The move itself won’t happen immediately. There’s still work to be done, planning to finish, and remodeling ahead in the fifth wheel. But every item that goes into storage brings us one step closer. And Miss Fred, of course, makes sure no step goes unchecked.

What’s funny is how cats somehow know when change is coming. Miss Fred senses it. She can feel the shift. New smells. Less clutter. Different routines. And instead of resisting it, she leans into it—fully inserting herself into every moment.

Supervising from the counter.
Supervising from the couch.
Supervising from the box she just claimed as her own.

Cat Proof Moving Boxes

Ellie and Abby watch from a distance, choosing comfort and quiet over chaos. Miss Fred, however, thrives in the middle of it all. If there’s movement, she’s there. If there’s noise, she’s listening. If there’s work happening, she’s definitely involved.

This season of transition is messy, busy, and a little exhausting—but it’s also exciting. We’re preparing for a new space, new adventures, and eventually, more travel. And while the hoomans focus on logistics, timelines, and budgets, Miss Fred focuses on what truly matters: being seen, being included, and being in the way.

And honestly? It wouldn’t feel right without her.

So as we pack up the old and prepare for the new, just know that nothing is happening without Miss Fred’s approval. The boxes may be labeled by humans, but they are claimed by cats. And the journey forward—like everything else in this household—will be supervised closely.

Stay tuned. The move is coming.
And Miss Fred will be watching. 🐾😼

OMG… We Have Our Very Own CAT Blog!

 Yes. It’s true.

RVing Catventures is officially a thing.

Who are we, you ask? Allow us to introduce ourselves properly.

We are three amazing cats, proudly traveling with the ME Gone RVing Adventures family—and now, apparently, we’re bloggers too.

First up, there’s Ellie Claus, the wise elder of the group. She’s the oldest, the most experienced, and the one who believes naps are a professional sport. You may hear her called Ellie, El, or, on occasion... Fat Hen (don’t ask… humans are weird). Ellie has seen some things and prefers comfort, warmth, and judging quietly from a distance.

Next is Abby, the middle child. She’s observant, curious, and always knows exactly what’s going on. Abby is the one watching from the window, making mental notes, and keeping tabs on everyone—especially the humans. She’s calm, clever, and not easily impressed.

And finally, the baby of the group: Miss Fred. Chaos. Curiosity. Confidence. Miss Fred is the explorer, the troublemaker, and the one most likely to get into something she absolutely should not. She’s fearless and fully convinced the world exists for her entertainment.

Each of us has a unique story about how we ended up with our humans and joined the ME Gone RVing Adventures family, but we’ll save those for future blog posts. After all, a good blogger knows how to pace content.

So… why are we doing this blog?

Because humans live off memories.

They look back on moments, photos, places, and stories, and somehow, those memories inspire them to make more. And we cats? We’re all about moments. Sunbeams. New smells. Quiet mornings. Long drives. Watching the world pass by through a window.

This blog is our way of capturing those memories, through whiskers, paws, and a whole lot of attitude.

Welcome to our very first blog post, where three cats are officially moving from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel. Yes. It finally happened. Our humans upgraded.

Do you know how long it takes humans to make big decisions? Forever. But they did it. And now they’ll be working very hard (as they should) to remodel this new-to-us 5th wheel so we can continue, and expand... our RVing catventures.

More space. More windows. More nap locations.
We approve.

The remodel means a lot of change, and while cats are known for pretending to hate change, we secretly love new. New layouts to explore. New corners to claim. New routines to supervise. We’ll be monitoring the entire process very closely, usually from wherever the humans are standing.

This blog will follow our journey as:

  • We adjust to life in a 5th wheel

  • The humans remodel our home (you’re welcome)

  • We travel to new places

  • We meet new smells, sounds, and scenery

  • We perfect the art of RV living as cats

We’re also hoping to network with other RVing cat travelers, because yes... those exist, and yes... we want to meet them. We are a cat-only RV household, and we fully support more feline representation in the RV world.

Dogs get a lot of attention.
We’re here to change that.

So welcome to RVing Catventures. This is just the beginning. There will be naps. There will be adventures. There will be opinions.

Lots of opinions.

Stick around, because three cats, one 5th wheel, and a life on the road is bound to be entertaining.
